Hitchwise
In short: Hitchwise works offline, with no account and no ads. Your progress, favourites and settings stay on your device, and nothing is sent to us.
Who is responsible
Hitchwise is published by AMBERCAT LTD, trading as EchoCedar Games, Suite 2, 1st Floor, Metropolitan House, Station Road, Cheadle Hulme, Cheadle, SK8 7AZ, United Kingdom. The director is Richard Irving Austin. Under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, we are the controller of any personal data described here. Contact: knots@ambercat.cyou.
What stays on your device
Hitchwise saves a small amount of information in its private storage so it can remember where you are:
- the knots you've marked as mastered, and your progress ring;
- your starred favourites and your best practice-mode score;
- your settings: rope colours, animation speed and whether haptics are on.
None of this leaves your device, and we have no way to see it. If Android's own backup is turned on, Google may include this app data in your device backup under your Google account.
What we don't collect
There is no sign-in, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking in Hitchwise. It doesn't ask for your location, contacts, camera, microphone or files, and it doesn't send data over the internet. Haptics use your phone's vibration motor only, and involve no data.
Google Play
Google Play delivers the app and handles its download under Google's own privacy policy. If you've chosen to share usage and diagnostics with Google, Google may give us anonymous crash and performance reports through the Play Console. They don't identify you, and we use them only to fix problems.
Children
Hitchwise isn't aimed at young children, but it collects no personal data from anyone of any age.
Safety note about knots
Hitchwise teaches how knots are tied and what they're commonly used for. It is not training for climbing, caving, rescue, work at height, fall protection, lifting or towing, and it can't judge whether your rope, knot or anchor will hold. Knots reduce a rope's strength, and a knot can slip or fail if it's tied or dressed wrongly. For anything where a failure could hurt someone, learn from a qualified instructor and use certified equipment. In an emergency, call 999 in the UK, or 112 across Europe. At sea or on the coast in the UK, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
If you email us
If you write to us, we receive your email address and your message. We use them only to reply, on the basis of our legitimate interest in answering you. We delete the conversation within 12 months of our last reply, unless the law requires us to keep it longer.
Your rights
You have the right to access, correct or erase personal data we hold about you, to restrict or object to its use, and to data portability. In practice, the only data we could hold is an email you sent us. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
Removing your data
To clear everything Hitchwise has stored, open Android Settings, then Apps, then Hitchwise, then Storage, and tap Clear data. Uninstalling the app also removes it.
Changes
If a future version changes how Hitchwise handles data, we'll update this page and its effective date before that version is released on Google Play.
